The late Willie Marshall was a critical part of the legendary Pioneer defenses of the mid-70's. He was at the top of his game during the iconic year of the 1973 when the Glenville State Pioneers advanced all the way to the National Championship game. He was First-Team All-Conference that year, playing at defensive end. Playing for head coach Bill Hanlin and Defensive Coordinator Earl "Whitey" Adolfson, Marshall was a three-year starter on some of the greatest defenses Pioneer History. The aforementioned '73 team would give up only 93 points the entire season, as the team ended as National Runner-up with a 10-2 record. They only allowed 7.7 points per game as a unit. Marshall was also a standout thrower for the Glenville Track Team. During his time at Glenville, he was joined by other First-Team All-WVIAC performers on the Pioneer defense such as defensive tackle Mark Reger, linebackers Scotty Hamilton and Dan Clevenger, and defensive back Jerome Fruit. Marshall would go on to a three-decade career as a coach back in Fayette County, coaching football, basketball and track. He was also very active in the community. Up until his death in 2016, Marshall remained active in the Fayette County Baptist Association as a Lay Minister.
