Greg Del Prince, a native of Ashtabula, Ohio and star golf player at Harbor High School was heavily recruited by Coach Tim Carney ’62 and it paid off as Del Prince brought much State and National recognition to himself, his team members and to Glenville State College during his four year playing career GSC.
Del Prince competed in three NAIA/National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics National Golf Championships, these in Saginaw, Michigan; Greensboro, North Carolina and Huntsville, Texas. In Michigan, he finished 38th out of 184 golfers.
Del Prince was WVIAC/West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Golfer of the Year as a freshmen at GSC in 1976 where he averaged 76.3 in six rounds of Regional play and was a Medalist in the Glenville State Invitational Tournament at Oxbow Golf Club in Belpre, Ohio. He was also a Medalist at the WVIAC Conference Championship that year.
During the 1977-78 season, Del Prince finished in the top ten in seven college tournaments. In the spring of 1978, he shot the lowest round in the WVIAC Conference Championship propelling Glenville State College to the National Tournament in Huntsville, Texas.
During the 1978-79 season, Del Prince participated in his third National Championship in Greensboro, North Carolina where he finished in the top ten in three college tournaments.
In 1979-80, he finished second in the California, Pennsylvania Tournament. Additionally, he finished in the top ten of five other tournaments that year.
Greg graduated from Glenville State College in 1980 with a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration with concentrations in Marketing and Retailing and is currently Head Golf Professional and part owner of Hickory Grove Golf Club in Ashtabula, Ohio. He is also Director of Golf at the Club.
For the past twenty years, Del Prince and Hickory Grove member Bob Calendar, owner of Calendar Insurance, have held an annual Junior Golf Clinic at the Hickory Grove Golf Club. They run the whole gamut to the area’s youngsters, from the putter all the way through the driver. “Come the third week of the clinic, the kids are playing golf every session the rest of the way so they really get a chance to apply what they have learned”, said Del Prince. This six week course is always the second week of June after area schools are out and continues to this day.
